Figuring, by Tom Mukasa

 Figuring

My hand stretched out,
Fingers pointing ahead anywhere,
A gesture tentative and pensive.

My head facing there,
Eyes fixed or searching,
A gaze, decisive.

My mind in a puzzle,
Conscience spinning out solutions,
A mood that is only contemplative.

An attitude of openness,
Impossible, possible, never done, try,
Optimism fuel for the progressive.

A frightening realization,
Sole journey,
Whose destination is conclusive.
